Growing Grass Gardens

If you give a grass plant growing conditions that are similar to those that it thrives in the wild then that grass plant will usually do very well. Its not always as easy as it sounds. Every garden has its own microclimate and although there are one or two things we can possibly do to improve that, usually by adding or growing wind breaks, creating sun traps and opening up shaded areas the options are fairly limited. There is nothing on the other hand we can do about the overall climate in general.

Living in the UK means we are living the temperate zone where our climate is very much influenced by the fact we are an island. The presence of the gulf stream blessing us with milder winters than we possibly deserve for our latitude particularly when compared with corresponding latitudes in central China, where the winters can be very severe

Many of the grass plants we sell come from these areas in China such as Ganshu, Sezchuan, Zhejiang where the seasonal changes are far more extreme than we experience in the United Kingdom. As a consequence we can easily grow attractive ornamental which is hardy down to minus 28 degrees without much worry. There is little to say about growing grasses. Most true grasses are very undemanding. They are unfussy about soil types. on the whole prefere a low nutrient well draining soil open aspect and drought resistant when established.

In the following sections we have tried to offer some suggestions and ideas for various themes for using bamboo and miscanthus in gardens from the Oriental Feng Shui Growing Grassand Prairie to the Contemporary 'minimalist' styles that have become so popular in the last few years. Today particularly in the small modern garden low maintenance, architectural planting, have become the key words in garden planning considerations.

Many of the miscanthus and bamboo plants offered from this site make excellent pot plants and ideally suited to patio and courtyard gardens. Many of the miscanthus and bamboos on offer look stunning when planted in oriental style glazed pots and planters of strong colours adding a different form and dimension to the garden along with the added grace of both sound and movement.

Most of the bamboo, miscanthus ornamental grasses at the Pot and Grass Company, unless stated otherwise, are hardy, easy to grow, low maintenance and versatile. There is a multitude of sizes, colours, leaf forms and textures to choose from. There is enough variety in the cultivars and species to suite virtually any garden plan or scheme; no matter whether you are planning a new garden from scratch or you just need a selection to that will fit comfortably within your existing garden layout.

Although all our bamboo and miscanthus will look very good in any garden design there are specific cultivars and species that are better suited to individual styles of garden. The choice is so wide it is sometime difficult to make an informed choice.

Oriental gardens for instance have become very fashionable offering an exotic and sometimes romantic alternative with simple clean architectural lines, strong colours and contrasting texture. Yet an Oriental garden can be difficult to coordinate, many gardeners are unaware of the very distinct differences in both style and philosophy of Chinese and Japanese gardens. Trying to combine the two styles rarely works.

You can search the Bamboo Store for hardy bamboo, ornamental miscanthus grasses by both Latin or common name or by characteristics. In the Bamboo Store you will find an exciting range of UK hard bamboo and ornamental grass available to satisfy most needs.

If you need to find the answer to a question about our bamboo or miscanthus grasses or just look for and click on the spider there will usualy be one around close by.
