Arundo Donax The Giant Reed The largest grass you can grow in the UK, growing to 6 metres. The stems are bamboo-like and the tough, glaucous leaves up to 6 cm wide. Strongly rhizomatous giving rise to dense patches. Flowering panicles emerge on two-year old stems and form a contracted mass of numerous small florets, furnished liberally with long, silky, purple-tinged hairs. Flowers in September and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Wind. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soil. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist or wet soil. The plant can tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.
